When it comes to the Adelaide techno scene, few artists can boast an underground electronic music legacy as strong as DCE. In the early days of Australian Techno, DCE owned the live performance circuit, performing alongside artists like HMC, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Blake Baxter, Marco Carola, Carl Cox, Gene Farris, Gemini, Derrick May, Luke Slater, to name but a few. An instrumental part of the local scene, DCE regularly performed live alongside local legends such as Outpost Uncorporated, Paddee, Cinnaman, Cycloid, DJ Bold, Metamethod, Demo, John Citizen, DJ Bundi, T-Com, Dirty House, Dan Block and 3 Jane.
DCE’s music covers a wide spectrum of electronic styles including techno, ambient/experimental, house, and electro.
A consistent theme across DCE’s music is a subtle progression of sound over a rhythmic undulating pattern. Favouring sound design over complex composition results in music moving along with highly dynamic layered sounds. DCE’s music has the ability to transport the listener to the another existence, conjuring up futuristic landscapes. DCE’s many pseudonyms are representative of the imagined reality during the music creation process.
Live performance has always been a DCE specialty.
DCE has been a prolific recorder in the studio over 30 years, with hundreds if not thousands of songs created in that time. DCE focuses on keeping his sounds underground, unique and rich whilst trying to have a progressive style that translates across a number of electronic genres. The initial DCE record “DCE 001 – Systematic Breakdown” was extremely well received, being played by many popular DJ’s globally. Like all things DCE, the record was quirky being transparent gold with a “hidden” song as a reverse groove. Subsequent albums were also successful, building a dedicated following of listeners with some songs even being picked up for use on TV commercials and shows. DCE appeared on CD and Vinyl alongside some of the industry’s biggest producers including HMC on Juice 14 producing a popular remix of “Materialise” and then on “X-Club Presents Domestic Sounds Vol. 1” where DCE appears alongside names such as Jeff Mills, Marco Carola, Ben Sims, Planetary Assault Systems, Steve Stoll, Damon Wild, Morgan, The Advent, Joey Beltram, Blue Print, Oliver Ho and Claude Young.
Not a fan of lightweight music, DCE has been inspired by many like minded artists over time. Predominately this has been the Australian techno sound as created by the likes of HMC, Cinnaman, Paddee, Damien Donato and other prevalent Australian artists. Global influences have been primarily from the United States with the likes of U.R., Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, Drexciya, Robert Hood, Jeff Mills instilling a love of rhythm and minimal loop based patterns driving the majority of the musical content. Influences outside of the US include Surgeon, Dave Clarke, Luke Slater (mainly under the Planetary Assault Systems moniker) and others.
